Kategorie: GYOTAKUS

Gyotaku

Gyotaku is a traditional artistic method originating in Japan dating back to the mid-1800s. This form of natural printing was used by fishermen who wanted to keep track of their best catches, but it also became an art form.

The oldest say that a long time ago a fisherman made a formidable catch, and, fearful that his companions would not believe him, he wanted to immortalize it by inking his fish and stamping it on paper. Others say that in the past fishermen used to hang stamps of their catches as a claim to sell the fish in the market. Be that as it may, this technique has come down to us and has become an art.

Here you can see the different varieties of fish that I have printed on rice paper, inking them with organic black ink and some you can find with acrylic inks with which I like to paint them in bright colors. Each work is an original and unique print, made with different fish and different sizes, from which you can choose your variety here and receive at home your own gyotaku made especially for you.
